Top 10 Travel Spots to Visit in the Philippines

Take it from a Filipino. Foreign YouTube vloggers will tell which places are best to go to in the Philippines, but it’s more fun (and legit) to listen to us Pinoys. And this is not an Instagram trap. So, without further fanfare, here is my top 10 list of travel spots to visit in the country.

#10 Port Barton, Palawan

I was glad to have visited Port Barton in Palawan before it could go all touristy. Most people overlooked the place upon arrival at Puerta Princesa, opting to jump to the van going to the popular El Nido. But Port Barton has all the beauty El Nido could offer. And more. The beaches here are as stunning as in the more famous neighboring places in Palawan, but with its raw beauty, and almost deserted islands, you could definitely have some peaceful vacation here. This place is really a step up.

#9 Baler, Aurora

A surfers’ haven, Baler in Aurora province is most famous for local tourists than foreigners who are unfamiliar with what the island of Luzon offers. The beauty is its proximity to Manila, no need an airfare to go here. Cool hotels, vibrant nightlife, and good food are just some of the things this place could offer.

#8 Iloilo

I like to call Iloilo the little Manila, a scaled-down version of the metropolis but with the beauty of a typical Philippine province. Of course, there’s their awesome beaches and Spanish-era churches but the real charm of the place is its people. They’re the most heart-warming of all Filipinos in the country. And they throw awesome fiestas too! Don’t miss out on their local cuisine that every visitors should try.

#7 Guimaras Island

There are a few places I would want to live in and Guimaras Island is definitely one of them. With pristine beaches every step of the way, one doesn’t need any more convincing once they stop on this rural island. Hopping on a motorbike around the island is always a joy all the while seeing the most picturesque places in the country. And Guimaras will not be complete without its famous mangoes, the sweetest in the world.

#6 Dumaguete

I am partial with Dumaguete as I was happily stuck here a few years back due to some flight problems. In its heart is the Siliman University, making the place a students’ town. It’s always cool to walk around the campus, trying the different restaurants dotted inside (and getting student discounts too!). And you will not get bored because the island easily has one of the most awesome diving spots in the country. You can swim with turtles if you like. Lastly, you definitely heard of Manjuyod Sandbar. Who needs the Maldives?

#5 Siargao Island

Geek Rate: Sky god Worthy (5 out of 5 stars)

The place for hippies and surfers, Siargao Island is definitely on our list. It is essentially a more developed Guimaras Island where you could ride a motorbike to visit all of its amazing beaches. The nightlife on the island is vibrant too, could be on par with that in Boracay.

#4 Cebu

The jump-off place to the many awesome destinations in the country because of its strategic location. But Cebu is more than that. The island is a combination of that metropolis feel and rural vibe that you seek. City feel, awesome beaches, Spanish-era churches, food and fiestas, Cebu has it covered.

#3 The Cordilleras

Finishing at the podium is the part of the country in the north collectively known as the Cordilleras. Included in this group is Baguio City where I essentially grew up. The summer capital of the country, most foreign tourists do not want to go to this place, preferring the beaches in the south. But Baguio City, with its climate and city feels, is a home away from home. Then there’s Sagada, just 6 hours up north, with its hanging coffins, breathtaking rice terraces, vibrant culture and tradition, and awesome restaurants offering some of the most delicious local cuisines. If you like Bali’s version of rice terraces, then you should definitely check out this place.

#2 Coron, Palawan

Our second placer is an island which is growing in popularity alongside El Nido. And with a reason. I got the chance to visit Coron, Palawan before it got all touristy, way before the destructive typhoon Haiyan. In my opinion, Coron has the clearest waters in the entire world. If I could see another which could match its beauty, I will be surprisingly shocked (in a good way). The underwater scene is so easy to check out even for tourists who don’t know how to scuba dive. The scene underneath its waters is so out of this world that when I left, my standard for an island beauty has been raised to a level that I believe could never be matched by any place in the world.

#1 Boracay Island

Geek Rate: Sky god Worthy (5 out of 5 stars)

I can feel raised eyebrows but Boracay Island is definitely the place to be in the Philippines. Combine all the beautiful beaches that I have mentioned in this list plus the nightlife of the country’s capital and you would end up in this place. One of the most popular destinations in the country due to its white sands and super awesome sunset, it is now a bit touristy, but as Hagrid says, if you know where to go, you will definitely have an experience of a lifetime in this place. I certainly did.
