Geek Film Review Vol. 2 No. 6: “Fanboys”

A fun-filled film about the depths on how far Star Wars fans will go just to watch the new Star Wars installment, before one of their friends die without seeing it.

Production company: The Weinstein Company
Cast:  Kristen Bell, Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler Sam Huntington, Chris Marquette
Director: Kyle Newman

Geek Rate: Sky god worthy (5 out of 5 stars)

A short time ago, in a galaxy not far away, Linus (Chris Marquette) is dying from cancer. The doctors estimate that he only has roughly four months to live; Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace comes out in six. To honor the wishes of their dying friend, die hard “Star Wars” fans Windows (Jay Baruchel), Hutch (Dan Fogler), Eric (Sam Huntington) and Zoe (Kristen Bell) set out on a cross-country road trip to George Lucas’ famous Skywalker Ranch. There, they intend to treat their pal to a screening of the movie series’ latest installment, before its official release.

As a Star Wars fan, this film has a certain pull to it than let’s say a Star Trek-themed film. There’s an excitement knowing that amid all the lines, there would be couple of them that only a fan would understand. But “Fanboys” is basically a tribute to fandom in general, not just a particular one.

Casual audience will not feel out of place in this film, too. True, there’s a lot of geeky stuff here but the feel good vibe of the film, peppered with some melodrama about the dying part, will have you entertained until the end. But the geeky part of “Fanboys” is what makes this film cool, at least to us. It shows how we substitute fandom for social skills, and while others will derisively snort about this, this film shows the own world of geeks, both the fun and the sad part.

Geek Rate: Sky god worthy (5 out of 5 stars)

zeus-512“Fanboys” is a celebration of all things Star Wars, and all things geeky. While the premise of the story is so impossible, that’s what makes it more exciting. And hey, this is Hollywood. The flaw of this film, however, is it’s failure to be critical of the parts that people don’t like about us geeks. To take the other side of the fence and examine itself amid all those funny lines (mostly peppered with 90’s references long forgotten).

The Characters

The lead characters sadly remained like 2D individuals, devoid of any background stories. The film jump into the road trip part so suddenly without expounding the characters’ story.

Fanboys Linus (Chris Marquette) – As a dying kid, Linus failed to capture my emotion but his devotion to the Star Wars franchise is inspiring, especially when he confronts his best friend Eric for leaving him and their dream. Very geeky.
superthumb Windows (Jay Baruchel) – Jay is our geek actor of all time but as Windows he was delegated to a minion status here with a 2D character. He could be lead here but his inclusion adds to the thrill of the film nonetheless.
giphy Hutch (Dan Fogler) – All group of friends has this dirty and loud member and in this case its Hutch. A husky Star Wars fan, he is the center of all things funny in the film, from the battle against the Star Trek fans to their little Vegas trip. But just so you know, not all geeks look like him.
008FBY_Sam_Huntington_015 Eric (Sam Huntington) – The geek that most of us wanted to be, his story is the one that is most expounded in the film, and he delivered in most parts. As the resident sketcher, he legitimatize the film in portraying what a group of fans look like.

FanBoys

Zoe (Kristen Bell) – We always love Kristen in all of her film, but a sexy geek is a bit out of reality, and there’s no way she would be possible in real life. But hey, as I said, this is a Hollywood film.
