Macedonia 1-2 Spain: Diego Costa and David Silva score to seal win and keep control of World Cup qualifying group

Spain made life difficult for themselves against a Macedonia side that offered little for a large chunk of the game in King Philip II Arena in Skopje on Sunday night.

As expected, Spain set out their stall early by holding over 70% of possession through the opening quarter of an hour. It would remain at or above that mark throughout the game. It also meant that once David Silva’s half-blocked strike after 15 minutes rolled beyond Dimitrievski, the home side’s task in getting back into the game grew close to impossible.

Republic of Ireland 1-1 Austria: Martin O’Neill angered by disallowed goal

jon

Martin O’Neill said Republic of Ireland had been “robbed” by the match officials after a late goal was disallowed in their 1-1 draw with Austria.

Jonathan Walters’ 85th-minute goal cancelled out Martin Hinteregger’s first-half opener in Sunday’s World Cup qualifying draw in Dublin – but the home side thought they had won it when Shane Duffy scrambled the ball over the line with three minutes left.

World champions Germany predictably beat San Marino during Saturday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier, winning 7-0 in Nuremberg.

Sandro Wagner scored a hat-trick, while Julian Draxler, Julian Brandt, Shkodran Mustafi and Amin Younes also scored.

San Marino didn’t hide their intentions early, pulling back with all players and tackling any opponents who ventured near the box with the ball. Emre Can fired the first chance of the match on goal from a resulting free-kick, missing high.

Serbia v Wales - 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying - Group D - Rajko Mitic Stadium

Wales’ hopes of qualifying for the World Cup remain intact – but precariously so – after their depleted side produced a spirited performance to draw in Serbia.

A hostile home crowd was stunned into silence as Aaron Ramsey’s outrageous chipped penalty gave Wales a precious half-time lead after Sam Vokes’ shirt was pulled.

The visitors toiled relentlessly to protect that advantage, though they began to tire as they were subjected to exhaustingly long periods of Serbian pressure.
