Here’s our ranking of the various Superman from Justice League animated series to a Lego superman to the TV series Superman and the movie version Superman with the exception (of course) of George Reeves and Christopher Reeve just because it’s obvious.

#7: Jerry O’Connell (Justice League: Throne of Atlantis)

Jerry O’Connell from Jerry Maguire and Stand By Me star joined the cast of Justice League: Throne of Atlantis as the voice of Superman, stepping in to replace Alan Tudyk from Justice League: War. Before the confirmation, O’Connell had disappeared from his show “Crossing Jordan”in preparation for the role. He has appeared in DC Universe animated shorts as Shazam, a role filled in Throne of Atlantis by Sean Astin.

#6: Channing Tatum (The Lego Movie)

It’s true, in an unlikely film Channing Tatum does in fact play the man of steel… er plastic. Tatum voiced Superman in the 2014 film ‘The Lego Movie.’ You may remember his character from his interactions with the Green Lantern voiced by Jonah Hill.
Yes, you read that right. The duo that brought you 21 and 22 Jump Street also had you laughing at their quips as Superman and the Green Lantern.

#5: Bradon Routh (Superman Returns)

As a guest on The DJ Tanner Show to promote his appearance in the upcoming third season of Arrow, Brandon Routh revealed during the interview that he has yet to find anyone who will actually complain about Superman Returns to his face. Asked by the hosts how he deals with negative responses from some of the more rabid Superman fans, the actor bluntly explained that “nobody has had the balls” to actually rage about the movie in his presence.

But don’t take that to mean that Routh has never actually heard any critiques about his performance in Superman Returns. As he explained on the show,
” If they have those feelings or misgivings they vent them on the internet, which I have definitely read over the years. I don’t shy away from that. I like to hear what people really think. And there’s truth to everything that people say negatively. They have their own opinions about what they wanted to see.”

Going further, he added that there’s simply no way that they can appease absolutely everybody, but that he knows that “there’s an overwhelming number of people who enjoyed the film,” and that’s who he made the movie for. (cinemablend.com)

#4: Tyler Hoechlin (Supergirl)

When CW’s Supergirl first announced that Tyler Hoechlin would join the show as Superman, the reaction was mixed to say the least. But now that we’ve seen the Big Blue in action, Hoechlin has nailed the role in every way that we hoped Cavill would. The CW’s decision to introduce Hoechlin first as his alter-ego, awkwardly conversing with his boss, was the perfect move. It would have been easy to open with a flashy reveal of Hoechlin in spandex — but with this approach, The CW reminded us that Superman may be a powerful symbol of hope, but Clark Kent’s humanity remains the real essence of the character, “lickety-splits” and all.(moviepilot.com)

The new Superman was kinetic. He oozed power. He moved faster than a speeding bullet, and didn’t just stand in front of them and let them bounce off. He had a hairy chest and, at times, a beard — much like the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths reinvention of Superman that came out of John Byrne’s The Man of Steel, his mid-’80s comic book reboot of Superman that was charged with modernizing a character that faced many of the same critiques as the movie version did twenty years later. #3: Tom Welling (Smallville)

Smallville began in 2001 on The WB, which morphed into The CW during the show’s ten-season run. Detailing Clark Kent’s pre-Superman life as a teenager, then an adult at the Daily Planet, the series chose to focus more on the humanity of the characters than costumed heroism. This more in-depth, emotional look at DC comic book icons made Smallville an influential predecessor to the current crop of superhero TV series like Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and of course, Supergirl. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Welling revealed he was pleased to have left a lasting impression with his long-running show.

So what does the actor think about taking on the Clark Kent character again for a new role on Supergirl? As someone who felt he and his fictional alter ego “grew up together,” Welling told Buzzfeed writer Jarett Wieselman that he isn’t sure how his version of the character would work on the new show. “There’s people who would like it… there’s people who don’t like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever actually asked me to do it. So, I don’t know. It would be kind of odd. I don’t know who he is at that point. He would obviously be Superman…” (screenrant.com)

#2: Dean Cain (Lois & Clark)

It’s almost 20 years since Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman aired its final outing – with one of the defining TV series of the 1990s ending on a cliffhanger. So cruel! We’ll never know what happened to Lois and Clark after that infant was dropped on their doorstep – but actor Dean Cain, who played the Man of Steel, has been up to a whole lot in the intervening years. Interesting fact: Cain was actually the second choice to play Clark Kent / Superman on the show that would go on to make him a star. Unknown to producers, their original pick – Gerard Christopher – has previously top-lined the syndicated series Superboy from 1989 to 1991. Not wanting to be linked to the previous series, they gave Christopher the boot when the truth was uncovered – and Cain was hired as his replacement. The rest is history, with the 27-year-old actor – born Dean Tanaka – becoming Superman for an entire generation. He’s dipped his toe back into the world of Supes several times since, playing villainous Curtis Knox in a 2007 episode of Smallville and voicing Clark’s father Jonathan Kent in this year’s animated film DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year. Most notably though, he’s currently recurring on the hit series Supergirl as the Maid of Might’s adopted dad Jeremiah Danvers. (digitalspy.com)

#1: Henry Cavill (Man of Steel/ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice/ Justice League)

Henry Cavill was screwed. It was another cold winter’s day on the Vancouver set of Man of Steel—the kind that makes It hard to get out of bed, harder still to get motivated to train, and for Cavill, nearly impossible to move that damn barbell. he was on his final rep of his final set of front squats when his leg muscles froze under the stress of the 305 pounds sitting across his shoulders. He had dutifully pounded out three sets of four with the weight already, but at the bottom of the fourth rep of his fourth set, Cavill’s muscles flat-out quit on him. His ass was pinned to the ground and his knees started to buckle inward. His trainer, Gym Jones founder Mark Twight, who closely monitored Cavill throughout his Man of Steel training, waited for his client to lean forward and dump the bar to the ground.

Instead, Cavill did something that Twight—a man not easily impressed—would remember forever. He drove his heels into the ground and pushed, his face twisting into an expression that can only come from an outlay of supreme effort, his body working harder than at any time during his entire year of training for the role. And slowly he began to rise out of the hole, grinding his way back up, until he completed the rep. He racked the bar, lifted his head, and opened his eyes… and everything seemed different. Suddenly there was confidence, and elation. But beyond that, there was puzzlement—the eyes of man trying to process a whole new world of possibility.(muscleandfitness.com)

When Warner Bros. revealed their full slate of DC Comics movies, no release dates for the new Batman and Superman solo films were announced (though they were mentioned to be in development). Rumors have persisted about Ben Affleck’s Batman getting his own stand-alone, though there has been little word since about Henry Cavill headlining another Superman feature.

Speaking with EW, Cavill opened up about the possibility, but he thinks that telling stories about the Man of Steel are far more difficult.

“There’s plenty of time for individual Superman sequels,” he tells the outlet. “He’s a tough character to tell. People like the darker vigilante. I think it speaks to the human psyche more easily rather than the god-like being that we can’t really understand. Once we have a more expansive universe we can delve more into the character of Superman and hopefully tell more stories.”

He may not be getting his own movie again soon, but Cavill will appear as the last son of Krypton in both Justice League Part One in November 2017 and Justice League Part Two in June 2019. (comingsoon.net)
