Day 2: The first gold medalist at the Rio Olympics is an American

The Rio Olympics have just started, but medals are already being awarded. The first goes to a 19-year-old American, Ginny Thrasher from Springfield, Virginia, who took home the gold in 10-meter air rifle. (via qz.com)

Day 2: Thanks to swimming, Australia leads medal tally with Hungary

Australians set a world record to claim gold over the U.S. in the 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of three minutes, 30.65 seconds. Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell and 100m freestyle world record holder Cate Campbell topped the American quartet of Simone Manuel, Abbey Weitzeil, Dana Vollmer and Katie Ledecky, who raced to 3:31.89. Day 3: The Philippines gets its first medal in weightlifting

The Philippines has its first medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics after Hidilyn Diaz finished with a score of 200kg at the women’s 53kg category in weightlifting. (via CNN)

Day 3: China, Australia lead gold medal count

Day 3: Britain’s Adam Peaty beats Cody Miller in Men’s 100m breaststroke

Adam Peaty won Great Britain’s first gold medal of these Games with an astonishing performance at the Aquatics Stadium. He did it in a world record time of 57.13sec, a full four tenths of second better than his record mark in the heats earlier in the week. In second place was a long stretch of water, and after that South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh and then the USA’s Cody Miller. (via The Guardian)

Day 3: In men’s football: Iraq’s draw against Brazil is a shocker for the host country

Brazil, who have never won the Olympic gold medal in men’s football, failed to win for the second consecutive game, held to a 0-0 draw by Iraq on Sunday. The hosts’ supporters jeered their team off and applauded Iraq for an impressive defensive performance.The result leaves Brazil tied for second place in Group A. They need to defeat Denmark on Wednesday in Salvador to advance and avoid another huge embarrassment at home two years after the 7-1 loss to Germany in the World Cup semi-finals. (via The Guardian)

Day 3: No medal so far in swimming for Brazil as Marcelo Chierighini fails to win in Men’s 4x100m freestyle relay

 

Day 3: In men’s football: World champions Germany saved from an early Olympic exit by Arsenal winger Gnabry.

Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry was among the goals as Germany came from behind to draw against Mexico. The Olympic champions opened the scoring early in the second half when skipper Oribe Peralta nodded them ahead. However, Gnabry climbed off the bench to haul the Germans level just six minutes later. Rodolfo Pizarro restored Mexico’s lead when he scored from close range after Marco Bueno’s header had been saved, only for Borussia Dortmund’s Matthias Ginter to equalise and rescue a point.
